Virtualization

Advantages of virtualization

"Companies which do not adopt virtualization as part of their IT strategy will pay almost an extra 40% in acquisition costs and an extra 20% in administration costs between now and 2008”.

Gartner Group

A number of advantages are associated with virtualization:

  • Consolidation of servers.
  • Increase in availability, reduction of interruption periods.
  • Reduction of administration costs.
  • Improved backup policies, flexible recovery through the checkpoints of the virtual machines.
  • Optimum use of available resources. Fast response to changes on demand.
  • Continuation of business and recovery in case of disasters. In case of failure of a physical system, the logical systems contained there can be dynamically distributed to other systems.
  • Scalability. Flexible growth with contained costs.
  • Virtual appliance: preconfigured virtual machines for loading and working. Packaged and preconfigured machines used to play a defined role (mail servers, data bases, VoIP switchboards, closed applications).
  • Maintenance of inherited applications. Proprietary applications which have not been adapted to the latest versions of the operating system.
  • Energy efficiency.
